Tips

Tips & Strategy

  • Start with letters you're most confident about — locking in a corner word first often reveals what the crossing words must be.
  • A single swap affects two tiles at once, so look for moves that improve both a row word and a column word simultaneously.
  • Don't rush to fix a yellow tile immediately if you're not sure of its final position — sometimes it's more efficient to solve other tiles first.
  • Count your remaining swaps against how many tiles are still wrong — if the numbers are close, you have no room for wasted moves.
  • At the 9 spots where a row word crosses a column word, I color the tile using whichever status is better between the two words — so a green tile there only confirms the letter is correct for at least one of its two words, not necessarily both.
  • The grid has exactly 21 real letter tiles — three 5-letter across words and three 5-letter down words sharing 9 crossing points — plus 4 permanently dark corner cells that never hold a letter, so when you're hunting for where a stray tile belongs, you only ever have 21 real candidates to consider, not 25.

Common questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the swapping work?
Tap two tiles to swap their letters. You have 15 swaps to arrange all the letters into six correct five-letter words — three across, three down.
What do the tile colors mean?
Green means the letter is in the right spot. Yellow means it belongs in that word, just a different position. The colors update after every swap, just like Wordle.
Is today's puzzle the same for everyone?
Yes. A daily seed picks the same six-word puzzle and starting arrangement for every player, refreshed at midnight UTC.
What happens if I run out of swaps?
The round ends. If the grid isn't fully solved when your swaps run out, that counts as a loss for the day — a new puzzle arrives tomorrow.
Does my progress save if I close the browser?
Yes, your current grid state and remaining swaps are saved locally in your browser.
Do letters ever need to move more than once?
Sometimes. A letter might need two swaps to reach its final spot, so plan ahead rather than chasing the first green you see.
What words am I looking for in Waffle?
There are six words in the waffle grid — three across, three down — sharing letters where they cross. I built the puzzle from a rotating pool of 30 boards, so the words change day to day, but every letter you need is already on the grid from the start, just scrambled; your job is to swap tiles until all six words read correctly.
How do I figure out the words in today's puzzle?
Watch the tile colors as you swap. Green tiles are already correct, yellow tiles have the right letter in the wrong spot for that word. Use those clues to narrow down which five-letter words fit, rather than guessing blind.
Is every Waffle puzzle actually solvable within the swap limit?
Yes, with room to spare. I build each day's scrambled starting grid by applying exactly 10 random swaps to the finished solution. Since a swap undoes itself, that means every puzzle is guaranteed solvable in 10 moves or fewer — the 15-swap limit leaves you a 5-swap cushion for exploring or recovering from a wrong guess.
Are all 10 scrambling swaps guaranteed to move a real tile?
Not necessarily — each of the 10 scrambling swaps picks two of the grid's 21 active cells completely at random, so it's technically possible (if unlikely) for a swap to pick the same cell twice, which does nothing, or for two swaps to undo each other. Today's puzzle might, in principle, be genuinely solvable in fewer than 10 real moves even though 10 swaps were nominally applied — the 15-swap allowance covers it comfortably either way.
If a word has two of the same letter, can both tiles show yellow?
Not automatically. I check exact matches (green) first, then only credit "present" (yellow) for a duplicate letter if that word still has an unclaimed copy of it to match against. So if a word needs one E and you've placed two E's in the wrong spots, only one turns yellow — the other reads as absent. It's the same duplicate-letter rule Wordle uses, not a simpler "letter is somewhere in the word" check.
What happens if my saved Waffle progress somehow doesn't match today's puzzle?
Every time the game loads, it verifies your saved grid is a genuine rearrangement of today's real solution — same 21 letters, same 4 permanently blank corner cells — before trusting it. If that check ever fails, it throws the save out and rescrambles a fresh starting grid from today's actual puzzle instead of showing you a broken board.
