Getting started

How to Play Daily Snake Challenge

  1. Steer the snake to eat the food.
  2. Avoid hitting the walls or your own tail as the snake grows.

Tips

Tips & Strategy

  • Plan a few moves ahead rather than reacting turn by turn β€” the snake only gets longer, so early paths affect later options.
  • Hug the edges deliberately to keep the center open for maneuvering room as your snake grows.
  • Avoid boxing yourself into a corner chasing food β€” sometimes the safer move is to circle back for it later.
  • Slow, deliberate turns are safer than rapid direction changes, which can accidentally trigger a reversal into your own body.
  • A direction press only takes effect on the next 150ms tick, and only your latest press before that tick counts β€” mashing several arrow keys quickly won't queue up multiple turns.
  • The snake always starts as a 3-segment body dead-center on the 20x20 board, facing right β€” so on a fresh run your very first real decision (up or down, since a hard reversal into your own neck is blocked) comes up fast, within the first couple of ticks, not after some warm-up stretch.

Common questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Is today's food layout the same for everyone?
Yes. A daily seed fixes the sequence of food positions, so every player faces the same run, refreshed at midnight UTC.
How do I control the snake?
Use the arrow keys or WASD on desktop, or the on-screen direction buttons on mobile.
What happens if I hit a wall or myself?
The run ends immediately. Your score is how much food you ate before that happened.
What counts as a win?
Eating 10 pieces of food in a single run counts as a win for the day.
Can I pause the game?
Yes, press the spacebar or the pause button to pause and resume.
Does my score save if I close the browser?
Your final score for the day is saved locally once your run ends. Reopening the game shows that result rather than letting you replay the same run.
Does Daily Snake Challenge support mods or custom skins?
Not right now β€” every player gets the identical board, controls, and food sequence for the day; there's no skin picker or mod loader. That fixed baseline is actually the point of the daily seed: if the ruleset could be modded, a 'same challenge for everyone' comparison wouldn't hold up. If you came here for the standard rules rather than mods, that's exactly what's running today.
Is this the classic version of snake?
Yes. It's the traditional arcade formula on a 20x20 grid: steer to eat food, grow a segment each time, and avoid the walls and your own tail. No power-ups, no gimmicks, just classic rules with a new daily food sequence.
Is this 'Snake 2' or a sequel?
No β€” there's just the one classic mode here, no numbered sequel or separate 'Snake 2' build. What changes day to day is the food sequence, seeded by the UTC date, not the ruleset.
Does the snake speed up as I eat more food?
No β€” the game ticks at a fixed 150ms interval for the entire run, from the first move to the last. A longer snake makes the board more dangerous, but it never moves faster.
Why doesn't pressing the opposite direction do anything?
A direct 180-degree reversal is always blocked so you can't turn straight into your own neck β€” the snake starts facing right, for example, so left is ignored until you turn up or down first.
Does an unfinished run save if I close the browser or reload mid-game?
No β€” only the final result (your score and whether you won) gets saved once a run ends. If you close the tab mid-run, that attempt is gone; reopening the game gives you a fresh "ready" start rather than resuming where you left off, unless you'd already finished today's run, in which case you'll see that saved result instead. That's different from some of the other daily games here, which do checkpoint mid-puzzle progress β€” Snake's real-time tick loop just isn't built to snapshot a run in progress.
How many food coordinates does the game generate for the day, and what happens if one would land on the snake itself?
80 β€” far more than the 10 you need to win. They're all pre-generated at once from the day's seed, in order, and if the next coordinate in that sequence happens to fall on a cell the snake's body currently occupies, the game silently skips ahead to the next free coordinate rather than ever spawning food you literally can't reach. You'll never notice this happening; it just means the food you see isn't always sequence position N, it's the first free one at or after N.
Does "Play Again" start a new official attempt at today's challenge?
No β€” Play Again builds a brand-new food sequence from a fresh, non-daily seed and plays it out entirely in memory. It never touches today's saved result, so your one real attempt at the daily challenge stays exactly as it finished; Play Again is just unlimited practice on a different, unofficial layout.
